Lawmakers from Nairobi initiate attempt to oust Governor Sakaja from office
Nairobi County Assembly Moves to Impeach Governor Sakaja
The Nairobi County Assembly has initiated the impeachment process against Governor Johnson Sakaja, following a special meeting held on August 26, 2025. The motion to impeach will be tabled on Tuesday, after the collection of signatures from the assembly members.
As of the meeting on Sunday, 63 signatures had been collected, with a threshold of 40 for impeachment. The Nairobi County Assembly currently has 123 members following the death of Hon Joel Munuve, the Kariobangi North Ward MCA.
The initiative to impeach Governor Sakaja was started by members of the Nairobi County Assembly (MCAs), who tabled about 20 charges against him. One of the key allegations is that the governor has been out of touch with the challenges facing city residents.
Waithera Chege, the Nairobi South MCA, has stated that the impeachment motion is currently being drafted at a private residence in Nairobi. Chege has accused Governor Sakaja of having issues with communication between the Executive and the Assembly, and of being out of touch with the ground and MCAs.
Chege added that the failure to disburse bursaries and Ward Development Fund is another issue in the impeachment motion against Governor Sakaja. Furthermore, the MCAs have stated that motions and bills passed by the assembly have not been implemented.
According to Chege, three quarters of members who call the governor cannot get him, indicating a communication problem. The residents of Nairobi have been asking questions due to the stalled projects, according to Chege. This is one of the reasons why projects have been stalled in the county.
Chege has also pointed out that there are issues supposed to be dealt with by intergovernmental laws, but Sakaja has failed to offer guidance. This is the first time that the MCAs allied to both ODM and UDA have united to push for Sakaja's removal.
The meeting on Sunday took place at Westlands, where the MCAs began collecting signatures to impeach Governor Sakaja. The total number of signatures collected remains at 63, with a threshold of 40 for impeachment. The impeachment motion will be tabled on Tuesday, marking a significant step in the political landscape of Nairobi.
