In the dynamic world of logistics and transport, Africa is making significant strides in 2025. The continent's leading companies, a mix of state-owned and private entities, are shaping the landscape.

Transco, based in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is a key player, focusing primarily on Kinshasa and planning an extensive bus fleet expansion. On the other side of the continent, JAS Worldwide, a South African logistics SME, operates in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, and Port Elizabeth. Other major players like Sonatrach (Algeria) and NNPC (Nigeria) dominate the oil, gas, and logistics sectors across their respective countries.

The volume of goods transported in Africa is estimated at a staggering 1.66 trillion TKM in 2025, reflecting the continent's growing economic clout.

The public transportation market is anticipated to grow at an annual rate of 5.33% between 2025 and 2030. In South Africa, Cape Town's primary bus operator, Golden Arrow Bus Services, is leading the transition to electric buses, with 20 electric buses introduced in 2025 and 100 more expected.

The logistics sector is also witnessing a digital revolution. GIGL's tech integration via the GIGGo app offers tracking, real-time updates, and seamless delivery experiences for customers and businesses. Lori Systems, revolutionising freight logistics in several African countries, operates in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Ghana, and Nigeria through a digital platform.

Imperial Logistics, now part of DP World, is Africa's logistics powerhouse, managing warehouses, fleets, ports, and cold chain infrastructure across 26 African countries. With over R52 billion in annual revenue and 25,000 employees, Imperial Logistics offers digital platforms for visibility, control, and seamless cargo flow from ports to cities.

Moove, a mobility fintech, is empowering thousands of drivers, many unbanked, to access income-generating assets. Partnering with Uber, Bolt, and others on a revenue-sharing basis, Moove provides vehicle financing for ride-hailing and delivery drivers across Africa.

The freight forwarding market in Africa is projected to reach a value of $157.21 billion in 2025, while the rail transport market is expected to increase from $590.53 billion in 2024 to $633.75 billion in 2025.

African airlines are also experiencing growth. Ethiopian Airlines, Africa's largest airline, operates over 130 international destinations and a growing fleet of Boeing and Airbus aircraft. In January 2025, African airlines experienced a 14.9% increase in passenger demand compared to the same period in 2024, and capacity grew by 11.2%.

Swvl offers tech-enabled bus booking and ride-sharing services in Cairo, Nairobi, and other African cities. ESLSE, Ethiopia's state-owned logistics hub, managing sea, dry port, rail, and road services, is connecting Ethiopia to the global trade network, having reported 57 billion birr in revenue in 2024, making it critical for Ethiopia's import-export economy.

CCI Worldwide Logistics launched a new Trans Africa logistics platform for digitizing and modernizing cross-border logistics. The public transportation market is expected to reach US$8.95 billion in 2025, signifying a promising future for the sector.

With $447 million in funding, Moove is not just transforming mobility, but also empowering thousands of drivers, many unbanked, to access income-generating assets. The African transport and logistics sector is undoubtedly on an upward trajectory, promising a more connected and efficient future for the continent.
