Leading PSV extends its six-point advantage over Feyenoord with a decisive victory
Eredivisie Roundup: Ajax Struggle, PSV Eindhoven Dominate, and More
The Dutch Eredivisie delivered another exciting round of matches over the weekend, with some surprising results and a few controversial decisions.
On Sunday, Ajax faced Sparta Rotterdam and struggled to secure a 1-0 victory. Kenneth Taylor scored the solitary goal from the penalty spot for Ajax, but the match was not as one-sided as the scoreline suggests. Sparta put up a valiant fight, but ultimately came up short.
Meanwhile, PSV Eindhoven continued their impressive form, defeating Feyenoord 2-0. Noa Lang and Luuk de Jong were on target for PSV, extending their lead at the top of the table to six points. Malik Tillman and Ivan Perisic both scored for PSV, with Perisic setting up both goals.
Elsewhere, Fortuna Sittard claimed a 2-1 victory over Utrecht. Fortuna took a 1-0 lead at half-time, but Utrecht equalised through an unnamed player in the second half. However, Fortuna responded with a second goal to secure the win.
NAC Breda also recorded a 2-1 victory over Go Ahead Eagles, thanks to goals from Sana Fernandes, Victor Edvardsen, and Oliver Edvardsen. The match between Heracles Almelo and Groningen was suspended with 11 minutes left to play on Saturday, and the outcome remains unknown.
In Friday's match, RKC Waalwijk and PEC Zwolle played out a 1-1 draw. Oskar Zawada scored for RKC Waalwijk, but Dylan Vente scored a penalty for PEC Zwolle to level the scores. Nick Fichtinger also scored for PEC Zwolle from a corner, but the VAR panel wrongly ruled the goal out for offside. The KNVB later acknowledged that the goal should have stood.
Twente Enschede lost to AZ Alkmaar 1-0 on Saturday, with AZ moving above Twente into fifth place. Willem II also won, putting four goals past NEC Nijmegen to move up to ninth place. Heerenveen lost to Almere City, while Almere City, AZ Alkmaar, and Go Ahead Eagles all claimed victories on Saturday.
In other news, PSV Eindhoven's winning goal against PEC Zwolle was wrongly ruled out for offside by the VAR panel. However, the KNVB has since acknowledged that the goal should have stood under the rules.
The Eredivisie action continues next week, with more exciting matches to look forward to. Stay tuned for updates.
