Legendary broadcaster Colin Cosell steps into his father's footsteps as Mets PA announcer
Colin Cosell, the grandson of sports broadcasting icon Howard Cosell, began his career in the world of sports media in a unique way. It all started at his high school's homecoming football game. Fast forward to 2018, and Cosell made his debut as a public address announcer for the New York Mets on June 2.
Cosell joined the Mets organization alongside Marysol Castro in the same year. Since then, he has been a constant presence in the booth, announcing several historic nights in Queens. One of his most memorable moments came when he introduced David Wright to the plate for his final two big league games in 2018.
The Mets' public address announcer has also been in the booth for parts of the team's last two postseason appearances in 2022 and '24. Cosell's current role is his first major league job, and he considers it a dream come true to be a part of a contending organization.
Cosell has worked as a PA announcer for various sports events before joining the Mets. He has announced games for the New York Empire of the Ultimate Frisbee Association, Army football, Long Island University, and the former New York Riptide of the National Lacrosse League. Cosell enjoys his role as a PA announcer because it allows him to take in the event he's covering, as opposed to the pressure and demands of commentary and sideline reporting.
Howard Cosell, Colin's grandfather, gave him his first taste of being behind the microphone as a five-year-old in his summer home in the Hamptons. Cosell's work at Citi Field is not lost on him, as he finds excitement in the fact that his voice fills a major league ballpark. The prospect of announcing the starting lineups for a World Series game is exhilarating for Cosell.
Cosell has witnessed significant events in Queens since 2018, including the New York Mets' 2022 playoff run, the debut of top prospect Pete Alonso, and the team's ongoing efforts to rebuild and compete in Major League Baseball. His first game was a 14-inning loss against the Chicago Cubs, but it was just the beginning of an exciting journey for the Mets' public address announcer.
Growing up as a Mets fan since 1986, when the team won the World Series, Cosell is well adapted to life in the booth. He bears a responsibility on game days, ensuring that the announcements are clear and engaging for the thousands of fans in attendance. Cosell expresses excitement about the possibility of being part of the Mets' elusive championship victory.
