Legendary fashion designer Giorgio Armani passes away at the age of 91.

Giorgio Armani, one of the most influential designers of the last half-century, passed away on September 4, 2023, at the age of 91. The Armani Group confirmed his death in a statement, with Giorgio leaving behind a legacy that has shaped the world of fashion.

Born on July 11, 1934, in Piacenza, northern Italy, Armani began his career in fashion in 1961 as part of Nino Cerruti's team. His first significant step came in 1974 when he launched his own men's collection under his namesake brand. One of his first pieces, an unlined, deconstructed jacket, became an icon of the new relaxed elegance that would define the Armani aesthetic.

In 1981, Armani expanded his fashion offerings with the creation of the Emporio Armani line. The following year, the women's line debuted under the Armani brand, positioning Milan as a fashion capital alongside Paris. Europe continued to be the first market for the Armani Group, with 49% of sales, followed by America with 22% and Asia-Pacific with 19%. However, the company felt the impact of the slowdown in the luxury industry in recent times.

Armani diversified into lifestyle in subsequent decades, with ventures in hotels, decoration, and gastronomy. In 2024, he celebrated his 90th birthday with a show in New York for the reopening of his flagship store on Madison Avenue. That same year, the company reduced its turnover by 5% to 2.3 billion euros.

Unlike other major Italian names, Armani always defended the independence of his company, being the sole owner until his death. Since his passing, the continuation of the Armani Group is being managed by a collective including Armani's nieces Silvana and Roberta, his sister Rosanna, her son Andrea Camerana, and his close associate Leo Dell'Orco, who has been Armani's right hand and leads the men's design studios. A stepwise, organic transition was planned by Armani himself.

In recent days, details about the organic succession suggest designer Leo Dell'Orco and Armani's trusted team as those responsible for the gradual handover. An open-casket viewing for the public will take place this weekend at the Teatro Armani in Milan. The world of fashion has lost one of its greatest icons, but Armani's influence will continue to be felt for years to come.

Armani also founded the Armani Foundation in 2016, focusing on education, culture, and the environment. His impact extends beyond the realm of fashion, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations. The Armani Group now has around 500 stores in 44 countries, a testament to the global reach of Armani's design prowess.

As we bid farewell to Giorgio Armani, let us remember his contributions to the world of fashion and his unwavering dedication to his craft. His designs will continue to inspire and influence the fashion industry for generations to come.
