PJD Guitars: Celebrating 15 Years of Artisanal Craftsmanship
Established in 2010, PJD Guitars has been crafting high-quality instruments for 15 years, although the company's production activities began two years earlier. The brainchild of Leigh Dovey, PJD Guitars has grown from humble beginnings into a respected name in the guitar world.
The company's flagship model, the Standard, is a testament to this growth. Originally out of production until the 15th Anniversary limited run, the Standard is now back in production, with around 250 to 280 units produced annually. Leigh himself has taken over final quality control for the Standard production line, ensuring each guitar meets his exacting standards.
The new Standard Series guitars, introduced in 2023, feature solid, lightweight obeche bodies instead of chambered bodies. They also come with industry-standard plainer and unroasted maple necks, a departure from the roasted and figured maple necks used in previous models.
In addition to the Standard Series, PJD Guitars also offers a range of custom guitars through its Custom Shop. Run by Josh Parkin and the owner, the Custom Shop produces around 50 to 60 guitars annually, with the number depending on the complexity of the models. This is where the Elite models, such as the original Carey, are crafted.
The Custom Shop also introduced the PJD Classic neck profile, a variation of the original PJD neck profile, which will be available as an option for any Custom Shop model.
PJD Guitars has also expanded its reach, appointing a new European distributor at the end of 2024. Germany and Austria are significant markets for the company, with around 50% of its production going to Europe.
The new 15th Anniversary limited run aims to replicate the original Carey Standard from 2020, which is made of swamp ash for the chambered bodies. The company has also decided to use swamp ash for its new Classic guitar.
