Lessons for Cardinals Management: Insights from the Phillies' Extensive Rebuild to Prominence

Once filled to capacity from 2007 to 2012, the Philadelphia Phillies struggled with attendance throughout the 2010s. Now, they lead the pack in attendance numbers. How can the St. Louis Cardinals duplicate that turnaround?

Lessons for Cardinals Management: Insights from the Phillies' Extensive Rebuild to Prominence

Cardinals Seek to Replicate Phillies' Success in Regaining Fan Base

The St. Louis Cardinals are looking to rekindle their fan base's passion by focusing on what matters most - winning and postseason success. This strategy, along with the owners' efforts, is key to attracting fans back to Busch Stadium.

The current fan attendance at Cardinals games, while still admirable, is significantly lower compared to past eras of Cardinals baseball. In contrast, the Philadelphia Phillies, who have faced similar challenges, have managed to bounce back.

Between 2004 and 2023, the Cardinals went to the World Series four times and emerged victorious twice. They also finished first in their division nine times during this period. However, they have not made the playoffs since the 2023 season, finishing last year with an 83-79 record.

The Cardinals drew three million or more fans every year from 2004 to 2023 (excluding 2020 and 2021). But in 2022, they failed to draw three million fans in two consecutive seasons, reaching 2,878,115 fans last year and projected to finish around 2.1 million this year.

On the other hand, the Phillies, who lost in the World Series to the Houston Astros in 2022, managed to attract large crowds to their home games. They took a full decade to reach three million fans again after 2013, a milestone they achieved in 2023 with two consecutive winning seasons and a World Series appearance.

The Phillies' model over the last five or six years could serve as a guide for the Cardinals. The Phillies implemented strategic player acquisitions, enhanced fan engagement events, and stadium experience improvements to attract large crowds to their home games.

Conscious efforts from the ownership will be crucial in regaining the trust of the Cardinals' fanbase. The DeWitt family, owners of the Cardinals, may consider the Philadelphia Phillies' recent strategies to attract fans once more.

The Cardinals' ultimate goal is to return to their winning ways and once again fill Busch Stadium with passionate fans cheering them on in the postseason.
