Approximately 162,000 children, both boys and girls, are projected to commence their educational journey in North Rhine-Westphalia during the 2020/21 academic year, as per the prediction of the state's Ministry of Education.

Life's gravity kicks in

In the 2019/20 school year, a total of 161,760 students began their educational journey in North Rhine-Westphalia. The majority of these enrollments were in primary schools, accounting for 95.6% of the total. Just 1.0% of students enrolled in Free Waldorf Schools, while 0.2% attended Primus Schools. A small fraction, 1.0%, were late enrollments due to health reasons, marking their first-time attendance in that school year.

Interestingly, 3.2% of enrollments were in special needs schools. On the other hand, foreign students made up 13.9% of the student body, reflecting the diverse cultural landscape of the region.

The gender distribution in the 2019/20 school year was relatively even, with 48.7% of students being girls and 51.3% being boys. Early enrollments, where children turn 6 after September 30, accounted for 2.2% of the total enrollments.

Looking back to the previous school year, 7,261 children received an exception start permit, enabling them to begin school for the first time in the 2019/20 school year.
