Line dancing rejuvenation: Steps to eternal vitality
In the picturesque region of Lanaudiere, Quebec, a unique community of dancers, spanning all ages, has been finding joy, fitness, and camaraderie through the rhythmic steps of country line dancing.
At the heart of this vibrant scene is 98-and-a-half-year-old Rolande Marchand, who discovered her love for dance in her fifties, socialising with her husband and continuing even after his passing. Today, she dances three times a week and climbs 54 steps to her apartment on the fourth floor, a testament to her physical health and cardio.
Another inspiring figure in this community is Christine Soucy, a 48-year-old massage therapy center owner. Christine's journey began at a bachelorette party, where she discovered her love for country dance. Since December 2023, she has been dedicating her time to perfecting her steps, now boasting a playlist of 400 country dance songs on Spotify and knowing the step combinations for each by heart.
Jacques Plourde, also known as Sam, started dancing at the age of 45 to please his wife but soon developed a passion for country dancing. Since 1997, he has been teaching country line dancing all over Lanaudiere, starting from a restaurant in Lavaltrie. Jacques compares country line dancing to a gym class, stating it improves morale, coordination, and concentration.
Jacques' dedication to country line dancing led him to direct three summer evenings of line dancing that each gathered about a hundred participants of all ages in the Saint-Thomas-de-Joliette Recreation Ground. His teaching talents were discovered after a tractor pull competition in Berthierville, where he found himself captivated by American country music.
Country line dancing offers more than just physical benefits. Christine Soucy finds it a source of joy and an escape from her daily worries. Rolande Marchand enjoys dancing in social events and parties at her residence. Both women attribute their cognitive benefits to the dance, as it requires remembering steps.
Jacques Plourde has reduced his teaching schedule with age but continues to teach, citing his passion for country dance as the driving force. He has gained friends, particularly female friends, through line dancing. Christine Soucy was even offered the opportunity to become an instructor at a dance school in Lanaudiere.
Despite the challenges that come with age, these dancers prove that age is just a number. Their stories serve as a reminder that it's never too late to discover new passions and embrace fitness in a fun and social way.
