Linnemann opposes Ramelow's hymn proposal suggestion
The national anthem of Germany, "Das Lied der Deutschen," is currently under debate, with some cultural and political figures proposing a change to Bertolt Brecht's "Kinderhymne" as a more modern and inclusive alternative.
In 2019, Bodo Ramelow, Vice President of the Bundestag, put forward the idea of replacing "Das Lied der Deutschen" with Brecht's "children's hymn." However, the proposal was met with criticism from CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann, who believes Ramelow is seeking a culture war and using the Basic Law for that purpose.
Linnemann considers the flag and anthem as symbols of democracy, fundamental rights, and rule of law in Germany. He argues that changing the national anthem could potentially undermine these values.
Ramelow, on the other hand, has expressed his desire to vote on Bertolt Brecht's "children's hymn" as a potential new national anthem. He finds the text of the hymn wonderful and suggests finding a way for a unified German anthem that could be sung with joy.
It's important to note that "Das Lied der Deutschen" is the current national anthem of Germany. The third stanza of the song, written by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben, is the one commonly sung.
The debate over the national anthem involves discussions about potential replacement, a topic that was also brought up during German reunification. During that time, Brecht's "Kinderhymne" was proposed as a potential replacement for the national anthem, but the idea was not implemented primarily due to traditional attachment to the established anthem and the political sensitivities surrounding national symbols.
Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) did not join Ramelow's 2019 demand to change the national anthem. Steffen Seibert, the then government spokesman, stated that Merkel finds the current national anthem beautiful in music and text.
Ramelow has stated that he sings the third stanza of the current national anthem with enthusiasm, but he knows many East Germans who do not sing it for various reasons. He believes that a change could help foster a more unified sense of national identity.
The controversy surrounding the national anthem in Germany is seen by some as a potential culture war, according to CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann. However, the debate continues, with both sides advocating for their respective positions.
