In the Rastatt/Baden-Baden region, an extensive contamination of approximately 1,100 hectares has been discovered, with a decrease in groundwater pollution not foreseeable. This contamination was first identified by the Rastatt Municipal Utilities in 2013, when their drinking water wells were found to be contaminated with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

In light of this, the state is offering its support to ensure a safe supply of clean drinking water to citizens. Since 2022, the Rastatt Municipal Utilities have been implementing a comprehensive concept for expanding the Ottersdorf Waterworks. This project, financially supported by the Karlsruhe Regional Council (Regierungspräsidium Karlsruhe), includes the construction of a new workshop, the expansion of treatment technology to include an activated carbon stage, the construction of necessary supply lines, and the construction of three new wells.

The state has approved a grant of approximately 1.44 million euros for the final construction phase of the Ottersdorf Waterworks expansion project for the Rastatt Municipal Utilities. In total, the Rastatt Municipal Utilities will receive approximately 3.21 million euros in funding for the entire project.

Environment Minister Thekla Walker stated that citizens must be reliably protected from the health risks associated with PFAS, while Sylvia M. Felder, President of the Government in Karlsruhe, emphasized the importance of municipal support in complex challenges like this.

All water suppliers in the region are called upon to address the challenges posed by the contamination of their raw water, in light of the requirements of the Drinking Water Ordinance that will apply from 2026. The Rastatt water supply is one step closer to ensuring a safe and clean supply for its citizens, thanks to the state's support and the Rastatt Municipal Utilities' comprehensive efforts.
