Local political leader seeks reinstatement of municipal elections in Aydın

In the heart of the Aegean region, the Turkish province of Aydın is embroiled in a political storm. The centre of the controversy is Mayor Özlem Çerçioğlu, who recently made a shocking move by joining the Justice and Development Party (AKP) after her election in the local polls held in March 2024.

The switch of parties has not been met with approval from the electorate. Residents of Aydın have been denouncing the transfer of Çerçioğlu to the ruling party, with protests erupting as recently as late August 18. The protest rally was organised by the leader of the Republican People's Party (CHP), Özgur Özel, who accused the mayor of losing her legitimacy to run the province.

Özel's address to the crowds was bold, as he accused President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of trying to steal mayors from cities his party failed to win in the latest local polls. He also claimed that Çerçioğlu had to join the AKP due to threats imposed by the ruling party. In response, Çerçioğlu filed a lawsuit against Özel for insulting her.

Despite the mayor's party change, the current power in Aydın remains with the CHP, as stated by Özel. The majority at the municipal assembly in Aydın still belongs to the CHP, which has not been affected by the party switch. However, the move has disrupted the political balance and may lead to new local elections in Aydın.

The switch of Mayor Çerçioğlu from the CHP to the AKP enables a legal or political basis for new elections in Aydın because she left the opposition party after being elected and joined the ruling AKP party. This move could trigger re-elections due to party switching in office.

The Aydın province is demanding fresh local elections following the mayor's resignation from the CHP and subsequent move to the ruling party. Özel made threats against Çerçioğlu, stating she would live in fear for having fled. He also accused her of fleeing potential prosecution over alleged corruption claims.

This political drama in Aydın is not an isolated incident, as other district mayors from the same province also joined the AKP on Aug 14. The unfolding events in Aydın serve as a testament to the ongoing political dynamics in Turkey, where party loyalties and allegiances continue to shape the political landscape.
