Longstanding Volkswagen garage confronts potential shutdown amid ongoing familial dispute spanning five generations of established practice
Historic Volkswagen Repair Shop Faces Eviction Amid Family Dispute
Freccia Brothers Garage, a beloved community landmark in Greenwich, Connecticut, is facing an uncertain future after being ordered to vacate its longtime home. The historic shop, which has been in business since 1922 and was built by the Freccia family who immigrated from Italy, has been the centre of a family trust dispute following the death of Frank II Freccia (Skip) in 2018.
The legal dispute was spearheaded by Theresa Freccia, Skip's widow, who led the family trust dispute that resulted in the eviction of Freccia Brothers Garage. The eviction notice was served in 2021, and the family's appeals to the ruling have since failed, leaving the Freccias with no choice but to vacate the premises.
Despite the challenging circumstances, the Freccias are not giving up. They have launched a fundraising campaign with a goal of raising $250,000 to help secure a new location and preserve the legacy of the garage. Guinevere Freccia, one of the beneficiaries of the family trust, has expressed a desire to pay it forward by supporting various causes, including a kid with cancer, foster kids, and Lucky Dog Refuge.
Freccia Brothers Garage has been a thriving business during the COVID-19 pandemic, and its community initiatives have made it a beloved institution. The shop is known for its artistic holiday displays, toy drives, and fundraisers. Its social media mascot, 'Lilly the Car,' a 1963 Volkswagen Beetle, has become an iconic symbol of the shop's dedication to preserving automotive heritage.
The Freccias are relying on the GoFundMe campaign and community support to carry on the business in a new location. Guinevere Freccia has stated that three out of the four trust beneficiaries would like to see the shop continue as her grandfather wished. However, the fate of the building remains uncertain, with Guinevere declining to speculate about its future.
The shop has had a lasting impact, with customers coming from Vermont, Florida, and other places. It is a living relic of the evolution from horse-and-buggy carriage repair to vintage Volkswagen expertise, and its iconic building has become a symbol of Greenwich's rich history. The Freccias are urging people to share their GoFundMe and follow them on social media as they navigate this difficult time and work towards a bright future for Freccia Brothers Garage.
