In a speech delivered to cadets, students, and the teaching staff of the Military Academy in Minsk on February 22, 2023, President Alexander Lukashenko emphasised the importance of discipline in the army and his stance against hazing. The meeting, which was reported by the BelTA news agency, saw Lukashenko reiterate his belief that order is necessary but not at the expense of brutality.

Lukashenko, who achieved iron discipline in his company during his military service, stated that fairness was the foundation of his approach. He made it clear that subordinates should not be treated rudely and that he does not tolerate hazing in the army.

The President recalled instances from his military service where he clashed with older soldiers who bullied recruits. He emphasised that everything done by him was in a manly way. Lukashenko also emphasised the importance of discipline, stating that it is crucial for achieving anything.

The Belarusian Armed Forces, which consists primarily of the Ground Forces and Air Force under the Ministry of Defence, evolved from Soviet military units after independence and includes both conscripts and reserves. The soldiers directly involved in conflicts during Lukashenko's military service against incursions were members of this force.

Hearing about hazing in units makes Lukashenko's blood boil, and he made it clear that he will not tolerate such behaviour. Lukashenko stated that subordinates should not be treated rudely and that he does not tolerate hazing in the army.

The meeting was a reminder of Lukashenko's commitment to maintaining a fair and disciplined army, one that reflects the values of Belarus and its people. The President's words serve as a call to action for all members of the armed forces to uphold the highest standards of conduct and respect for their fellow soldiers.
