Lunar blood red eclipse appearing over the city of Karlsruhe
On Sunday, 7 September 2025, the skies over Karlsruhe will host a captivating celestial event - a total lunar eclipse. This spectacle will be visible in large parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia, but for those in Karlsruhe, the Astronomical Association Karlsruhe (AVKa) offers an opportunity to enjoy the event in the best possible way.
The Moon's entry into the Earth's penumbra will begin in the late afternoon over Karlsruhe. To capture the Moon's surface during the eclipse, it is suggested to use a tripod or telephoto lens. As the Moon exits the umbra around 22:55 over Karlsruhe and fully leaves the eclipse by this time, a clear view of the east horizon, away from trees and high buildings, is recommended for observation.
The total phase of the lunar eclipse begins around 19:30 over Karlsruhe. During this phase, the Moon will display a characteristic red light, a phenomenon known as the blood moon, until around 20:53 over Karlsruhe. Fortunately, this mesmerising sight can be observed very well without a telescope in Karlsruhe.
For a more enriching experience, the recommended local observation point is the observatory at the Max-Planck-Gymnasium in RΓΌppur. The AVKa plans to open the observatory from 19:00 if the weather is clear, providing additional insights and observation opportunities for the lunar eclipse.
It's worth noting that the next total lunar eclipse visible in this region will occur on December 31, 2028. So, mark your calendars and don't miss this unique opportunity to witness the cosmic dance of the Moon and Earth in Karlsruhe on September 7, 2025.
