Luxurious Prix Morny Contest Witnesses Clash Between Gstaad, Venetian Sun, and Wise Strategy; Speedy Colt 'Possessing Star-Quality' Arrives Courtesy of Trainer Wesley Ward
In the heart of the racing season, the prestigious Prix Morny is set to take centre stage in Deauville, France. The race, renowned for its high-speed thrills and top-class competition, will see a host of talented horses vying for victory.
One of the key contenders is Coppull, trained by Clive Cox. After a promising performance at Goodwood, Coppull is keen to close the gap with Gstaad, the winner of the coveted Coventry Stakes. Cox is optimistic about Coppull's chances, expressing his satisfaction with the horse's progress since Goodwood.
Another noteworthy entrant is Outfielder, a Speightstown colt trained by Wesley Ward. Outfielder made a strong impression at Churchill Downs in May, winning impressively, and is now set to run in the Prix Morny. Riley Ward, the assistant trainer, is optimistic about Outfielder's chances, stating that the colt looks super and has trained well. David Egan, the retained jockey of Outfielder, will be in the saddle for the race.
Outfielder's co-owner, Jayson Werth, shares the optimism, believing that the best horse will win the Prix Morny and hoping that Outfielder can be the champion. Interestingly, Outfielder will be Ward's first runner in the Prix Morny since 2018, and the colt did not race at Royal Ascot before the Prix Morny, unlike Ward's previous four runners in the race.
Wise Approach, trained by Charlie Appleby, is another horse to watch. Appleby's charge needs to step up again in this company, but the style of race and track at Deauville should suit him. Wise Approach made no mistake over six furlongs at Newbury, impressively securing a victory.
Venetian Sun, trained by Tom Segal, is another horse with strong form. Venetian Sun has already backed up her royal meeting win in the Albany with a neck defeat of Royal Fixation at Newmarket. The form of Venetian Sun's win received a significant boost when Royal Fixation landed the Lowther Stakes on Thursday.
France's sole representative, Imperial Me Cen, needs to take a step forward after finishing fourth in the Prix Robert Papin. Gstaad, a Starspangledbanner colt trained by Aidan O'Brien, won the Coventry Stakes and is in good form, having trained well since Ascot. O'Brien believes Gstaad to be the cream of the 2025 crop. However, Gstaad's scheduled meeting with stablemate True Love in the Phoenix Stakes was canceled due to Gstaad being off-colour.
With such a strong field of contenders, the Prix Morny promises to be an exhilarating race. As Tom Segal, the trainer of She's the one to beat, puts it, there are two tips at Goodwood and a strong Sunday fancy in France. The race is set to be a thrilling spectacle, and only time will tell who will emerge victorious.
