Record-Breaking E-Auction of Vanity Numbers in Chandigarh

In an unprecedented event, the e-auction of vanity numbers in Chandigarh has set new records, generating an all-time high revenue inflow of ₹4.08 crore. The auction, conducted by the Chandigarh Transport Department, saw intense bidding for several numbers, particularly for the most coveted '0001'.

The vanity number '0001' of the CH01-DA series was the costliest bid in the auction, selling for ₹36.43 lakh. This surpassed the previous record set in May 2025, when the same number '0001' from the CH01-CZ series was sold for ₹31 lakh.

Multiple bidders contested for the ownership of '0001', leading to a competitive bidding war. The second highest bid was won for the number '0003' at ₹17.84 lakh, while '0007' associated with James Bond due to the intelligence code '007' was sold for ₹16.50 lakh. The number '0009' also fetched a high price of ₹16.82 lakh.

The e-auction for the CH01-DA series, held for four days from August 19 to August 22, witnessed aggressive bidding similar to the May 2025 auction. A total of 577 registration numbers were sold in the e-auction, boosting the overall collection by more than ₹1.1 crore from the previous time.

The auction of the CH01-DA series has generated an all-time record revenue inflow for the Registering and Licensing Authority (RLA) Chandigarh. The RLA witnessed an inflow of ₹4.08 crore from the e-auction for vanity numbers, surpassing the previous record set in May 2025 with a revenue of ₹2.94 crore.

This marks the highest-ever revenue collected from a single auction of vehicle numbers in the city, according to officials. The reserve price of the number '0001' was ₹50,000, indicating the significant premium placed on these vanity numbers.

The e-auction led to the selling of remaining vanity/special numbers from the previous series. The Chandigarh Transport Department aims to continue conducting such auctions to maximize revenue and provide citizens with the opportunity to own unique registration numbers.
