Major Milestone Reached: Operational Bicycle Bridge Now in Operation - Here's How It Functions
In a significant development for the city of Hamburg, the new pedestrian and cycle bridge, named Entenwerder, has been successfully lifted into place. This crucial connection will link the districts of HafenCity and Rothenburgsort, serving as a significant symbol for the mobility transition in the city.
The construction of the Entenwerder bridge, one of the largest of its kind with a length of 135 meters and a support width of 75 meters, is scheduled for completion by mid-2026. The bridge's assembly began piece by piece on the abutments between the Elbe bridges and the Park Entenwerder by a floating crane since Monday.
The path between the bridge and the Alexandrastieg in the Elbpark Entenwerder will be widened from three to four meters to accommodate the increased pedestrian and cycle traffic. Adaptations to paths leading to the Elbbrücken stop will also be made to ensure smooth flow of traffic.
Transport Senator Anjes Tjarks (Greens) commented that the bridge is a strong symbol for the mobility transition in Hamburg. The bridge's construction is a testament to the city's commitment to sustainable and accessible transportation options.
Hamburg, Europe's bridge capital with almost 2500 bridges, is set to welcome another significant addition to its infrastructure. Notably, the bridge's construction process culminated with the lifting of the middle segment this week.
In other news, a World War II bunker near the bridge site will be demolished after years of conflict. However, no information has been provided about what will be built on the site of the demolished bunker.
