Malfunctioning touch sensor on HomePod mini leads to spooky unwinding by apparition-like hand

The HomePod mini, Apple's compact smart speaker, has been plagued by a recurring problem that leaves some users frustrated. The issue appears to stem from hardware problems with the integrated touch sensor on top of the device.

Some users have reported a potential solution: disconnecting the touch sensor's cable inside the HomePod mini. This temporary fix, however, limits functionality to connected devices like iPhones, iPads, or Macs. It's important to note that Apple, the manufacturer responsible for HomePod repairs, is the only entity that can restore full touch sensor functionality. Without AppleCare+, repair fees apply, and third-party repairs may not be able to restore the touch sensor if the cable is destroyed or removed.

The problem can manifest unexpectedly, even in the middle of the night, causing the HomePod mini to start playing music or a podcast without user intervention. In some cases, the device can get stuck in a reset loop, often preceded by the "ghost music" issue. This loop can be challenging to break, and the affected units, many of which are older, tend to be from 2021.

The exact trigger for this issue remains unclear. Some speculate that it could be related to the use of the plus and minus buttons for volume adjustment. The problem has been reported on platforms like Reddit and the official Apple Support Forum for over a year.

Apple's mandatory 24-month warranty under EU law may have expired for older units, leaving users without free assistance. A repair of the HomePod mini, which costs 89 Euros without AppleCare+ device coverage, may not be worth the cost due to potential "other damages."

Despite the challenges, a simple reset method exists. By placing a hand on the device while the red reset light is on, the HomePod mini can be reset. However, the "ghost music" issue and the unintentional reset mode can reoccur.

It's worth mentioning that the retail price for new HomePod minis ranges from 90 Euros, depending on the colour. Cleaning the HomePod mini's surface with a damp cloth or rubbing alcohol does not seem to solve the problem.

As Apple continues to investigate the issue, users are left hoping for a permanent solution to this persistent problem with their HomePod minis.
