Mammoth Individuals Pay Homage to the Tragedy of Elevator de la Gloria Mishap
In the heart of Lisbon, Portugal, the historic Elevador da Glória has become the centre of a tragic event. This elevator or funicular railway, connecting Restauradores to Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara in the Bairro Alto, covers approximately 265 meters with a steep 17% incline.
Inaugurated on October 24, 1885, the Elevador da Glória has been a staple of the city's landscape for over a century. It was granted the status of National Monument in 2002, reflecting its cultural and historical significance.
However, on Wednesday at 18:04, the Elevador da Glória was the site of a devastating accident. According to INEM, at least 15 deaths and 18 injuries were reported. Among the injuries, five were severe, and 13 were minor.
The cause of the accident remains unclear, and no new details have been provided. The municipal public transport company Carris, which operates the Elevador da Glória, has not yet released a statement regarding the incident.
In response to the tragedy, Benfica, Porto, and Sporting, three of Lisbon's major football clubs, have expressed their solidarity with the victims. Benfica took to Instagram to express their sorrow and condolences to the families of the victims.
As the city mourns and searches for answers, the Elevador da Glória, once a symbol of Lisbon's vibrant spirit, stands silent and sombre. The accident took place on Calçada da Glória, a reminder of the day when tragedy struck this national monument.
