Gianluigi Donnarumma, the highly-rated goalkeeper who was recently axed by head coach Luis Enrique from Paris Saint-Germain, is expected to complete a move to Manchester City on transfer deadline day.

The 22-year-old Italian international has seen his time at Paris Saint-Germain come to a disappointing end, with a deal between Manchester City and Donnarumma reportedly agreed, and a medical scheduled for this afternoon.

Donnarumma bid an emotional farewell to Paris Saint-Germain's fans on the pitch after their season-opening win over Angers, expressing his disappointment about being removed from the group.

With Donnarumma's arrival, Manchester City's 22-year-old England Under-21 shot-stopper James Trafford may face increased competition for a starting spot between the sticks. Trafford, who returned to Manchester City in a deal worth £27m in July following a spell at Burnley, has started each of City's first three Premier League games this season.

Trafford has had mixed success in his early City career, with his side losing two of their first three games. However, England hero Stuart Pearce has urged Trafford to view Donnarumma's arrival as a potential learning opportunity.

Donnarumma is a proven performer at the highest level, having lifted the Champions League with PSG in May and the Euro 2020 title with Italy. If the transfer goes through, he would likely replace Ederson as Manchester City's no.1 goalkeeper, with Ederson closing in on a move to Fenerbahce, with a fee worth around £12 million reportedly agreed between Fenerbahce and Manchester City.

Donnarumma will have to compete with Stefan Ortega for the starting spot between the sticks at Manchester City. Ortega, who joined City from Arminia Bielefeld in the summer, has yet to make his competitive debut for the club.

The manager of Manchester City, Pep Guardiola, is said to have applied for advising James Trafford during the arrival of Donnarumma. This move is set to shake up the goalkeeping department at Manchester City, and fans are eagerly awaiting the official announcement of Donnarumma's signing.
