Greater Manchester is set to see significant improvements in its transport system, as the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) has approved a series of projects aimed at making journeys safer, cleaner, and more accessible.

The Bee Network, a programme funded through the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS), a 1.07 billion GBP programme, is at the heart of these improvements. The Network aims to provide reliable, accessible, safe, affordable, and sustainable travel options in Greater Manchester.

One of the key projects includes a residential electric vehicle (EV) charging pilot, which has been approved with a budget of 700,000 GBP. This pilot will test flush-fitting and pedestal chargers, aiming to make EV charging more convenient for residents.

Another significant investment is the installation of real-time Passenger Information Displays at 319 bus stops and five transport interchanges, which will cost 2.7 million GBP. This upgrade will provide passengers with up-to-date information, enhancing their travel experience.

Bolton, at Topp Way / Higher Bridge, will receive 2.5 million GBP for the installation of a CYCLOPS junction and new segregated cycle lanes. This investment is part of the Bee Network's commitment to improving cycling infrastructure.

Over half of the new funding (16.8 million GBP) will be allocated to make four additional rail stations (Swinton, Reddish North, Hindley, and Bryn) fully step-free. This move will make these stations more accessible for all passengers.

Stockport, at A6 / Heaton Chapel, will receive 2.24 million GBP for new Toucan crossings, 20mph zones, and improved cycling and walking links. This investment will further enhance the safety and accessibility of the area.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) will invest over 30 million GBP in the Bee Network. This investment will support public transport and active travel improvements, including the Travel Hubs Access Programme, which will receive 400,000 GBP to improve first- and last-mile walking and cycling access to public transport stops.

Furthermore, a further 4.5 million GBP will be used to improve more than 220 bus stops with upgrades including new shelters, raised kerbs, clearer road markings, and better pedestrian access.

The projects include enhancements to rail stations, bus stops, cycling infrastructure, and real-time information systems. These improvements are part of a broader ambition to develop a safer, cleaner, and more accessible transport system in the city-region.

These projects are the latest in a series of schemes aimed at improving journeys for people across Greater Manchester. Recent improvements have been made to Daisy Hill and Irlam stations, with more accessibility work planned for the four additional rail stations.

The sale West to Altrincham will receive 2.2 million GBP for pedestrian crossing and traffic signal upgrades at A56/Barrington Road and A56/Sinderland Road.

These investments mark a significant step towards Greater Manchester's goal of providing a modern, efficient, and sustainable transport system for all its residents.
