Manchester United transfer talks with Emiliano Martinez's family fall through; according to them, "it's a done deal tomorrow, but it didn't go ahead today..."
Emiliano Martinez, the Argentine goalkeeper who has been a key player for Aston Villa, is set to continue his tenure with the club after the transfer window closed. Despite speculation linking him to a move to Manchester United, Martinez returned to Villa Park.
Martinez's brother, Alejandro, compared his brother's impact at Aston Villa to that of Diego Maradona, emphasising his importance to the team. The club officials, however, made the decision to keep Martinez, with Alejandro stating that they did not want to sell him.
The transfer saga was described by Alejandro as being akin to a factory and Emiliano as an employee. His father, Alberto, took a more pragmatic view, stating, "it's all business." Meanwhile, Martinez's father described the situation at Old Trafford as being taken "very sportingly."
During his brief absence, Marco Bizot started in goal for Aston Villa. Martinez, however, did not play two games for the club in the Premier League before returning.
In the midst of the transfer speculation, Martinez traveled to his home to face Venezuela in a South American qualifier for the World Cup. His Argentine teammate, Lisandro Martinez, plays for Manchester United, and the two reportedly had a conversation during this time.
Following the South American qualifier, Argentina's next match is against Everton in the United Kingdom. Martinez is expected to start for Argentina against Ecuador on September 10.
Despite the transfer speculation, Martinez's future appears to lie at Aston Villa for now. His performances and the club's apparent desire to keep him suggest that he remains an important player for the club, and fans can look forward to seeing him in action once more.
