Manchester United's hopes for acquiring Chelsea's forward faced potential jeopardy as Bayern Munich considered presenting a competitive offer for the player.
Manchester United are looking to bolster their forward line ahead of the new Premier League season, with reports suggesting that they have set their sights on Christopher Nkunku of Chelsea.
The Red Devils have been in search of new attacking talents in the summer transfer window, and Nkunku, who is currently in the United States of America helping out with Chelsea's Club World Cup campaign, has emerged as a potential solution to their issues in wide areas.
This comes after Leroy Sane's exit for Galatasaray and Jamal Musiala's injury, which have left gaps in the team's attack. Bayern Munich, too, have shown interest in the French international, having previously been linked with a move for him in January.
Nkunku had a much happier time of things in Germany during his four-year spell with Leipzig, yielding 47 goals and 43 assists in 119 appearances. In contrast, his time at Chelsea has been less fruitful, with just six goals and two assists in 38 league outings.
Manchester United's interest in Nkunku is not surprising, given their new director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, shares connections with the player from his time at Leipzig and Chelsea. However, they may face competition from Bayern Munich, who have reportedly already held discussions with Nkunku's representatives as a prelude to a potential move.
Meanwhile, United have been unable to strike an agreement with Brentford to take Bryan Mbeumo to Old Trafford, while Enzo Kana-Biyik has joined the club as a youngster for the future. Matheus Cunha has already joined United from Wolves.
Last season, United suffered defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final and finished in 15th place, their worst campaign in 50 years. They were outscored by every team in the division except the three relegated sides and Everton.
With the arrival of Erik ten Hag as manager, United will be hoping for a fresh start and a return to form next season. The acquisition of Nkunku could be a significant step towards achieving that goal.
However, Bayern Munich, who have a strong reputation for developing and nurturing young talent, will not make the pursuit of Nkunku easy. The race for his signature is set to be an interesting one to watch.
