The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, has issued a statement via the official website of the Presidency of the Republic, expressing his deep condolences and solidarity towards the victims and their families of the Gloria elevator accident that occurred on Wednesday in Bairro Alto.
The popular tourist attraction, managed by the municipal company Carris, connects Restauradores to the Garden of São Pedro de Alcântara and has a journey of approximately 265 meters. The accident, which caused serious injuries to people of various nationalities, has resulted in 16 fatalities, including South Korean and Swiss citizens.
In the statement, President Rebelo de Sousa conveyed the profound grief and solidarity of the Portuguese people towards the victims and their families. He also wished a speedy recovery to the injured. The President has sent condolence letters to the heads of state in the countries where these citizens were directly affected, but the specific recipients have not been disclosed.
