Marseille in Crisis Following Violent Dressing Room Incident

Marseille's second Ligue 1 match of the season will be at home to newly-promoted Paris FC on Saturday, but the club is currently embroiled in a full-blown crisis following a violent and aggressive incident in the dressing room after their 1-0 defeat to Rennes.

The incident, which has been described as going beyond any limits, involved Adrien Rabiot and England Under-21 international winger Jonathan Rowe. Both players are currently without a contract at the club.

Jacques-Henri Eyraud, Marseille's president, stated that the incident went beyond what is acceptable in a football club. He was not in the dressing room but was informed about the incident by the staff.

The 30-year-old Rabiot, who has 53 caps for France, joined Marseille as a free agent at the beginning of last season after leaving Juventus. Rowe's deal with Marseille, who he was on loan at from Norwich City last season, was made permanent in the summer.

Rabiot had an outstanding first campaign at the Velodrome, but Marseille have not been able to persuade him to extend his contract, which expires at the end of this season. The decision to put Rabiot up for sale was made to protect the club as an institution and to ensure Marseille's season goes forward.

Marseille, who finished second in Ligue 1 last season, had ambitions of pushing champions Paris Saint-Germain under Italian coach Roberto De Zerbi this season. However, the incident has cast a shadow over their hopes.

Jacques-Henri Eyraud, who has been Marseille president since 2021, stated that he and the team's coaches have never seen anything like the incident in a dressing room. Even in the worst punch-ups, there are rules, but not in this case.

Marseille's president, Pablo Longoria, has put Rabiot up for sale, but this decision is not related to his contractual situation. Longoria stated that he will not be president of a club where there are no rules.

The club, which is the victims in this situation, according to Longoria, as a fight like this is unheard of in the world of football. Marseille lost the game despite playing for an hour with an extra man.

The ambitions of Marseille, who finished second in Ligue 1 last season, to push champions Paris Saint-Germain under Italian coach Roberto De Zerbi this season are not mentioned in this article. The focus remains on the incident and the crisis it has caused at the club.
