New appointment on September 15: Martin Jaeger begins tenure as BND President - Martin Jäger assumes presidency of BND on September 15
New BND President Martin Jäger Takes Office Amid Tense Security Political Situation
Martin Jäger, a highly respected diplomat with decades of professional experience, has assumed the role of President of the BND, the foreign intelligence service of the Federal Republic, on September 15. Jäger's appointment comes at a time when the demands on the BND are higher than ever, given the current security political situation.
Before his appointment as BND President, Jäger served as German ambassador to Ukraine, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He also held positions as state secretary in Baden-Württemberg's interior ministry and the federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. Jäger's career includes a temporary stint in the private sector as chief lobbyist for Daimler in 2008.
In 2013, Jäger served as spokesman for the Federal Ministry of Finance, a role he held until 2016. From 2016 to 2018, he was State Secretary in the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Interior. From 2018 to 2023, Jäger was State Secretary of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development in Berlin.
Prior to his role as BND President, Jäger intensively dealt with Russian politics during his time in Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, where he served as the German ambassador. His tasks include further strengthening the international position of the BND and ensuring that the BND acts as a partner on an equal footing with other Western services.
The BND's task is to collect, evaluate, and provide information of external and security political significance to the Federal Government. The tense security political situation makes Jäger's appointment a great gain, according to Chancellery Minister Thorsten Frei. The BND's work as an information service provider and early warning system is critical to the Federal Government.
According to the BND's assessment, Russia poses an increasing threat to Germany and Europe. Minister Frei thanked the previous BND President Kahl for his "successful" work. Frei also highlighted that Jäger's experience with Russian politics and his diplomatic skills will be invaluable in navigating the current security political landscape.
The BND is considered an important part of the German security architecture. Its work is crucial in maintaining the safety and security of the Federal Republic in an increasingly complex and uncertain world. Jäger's leadership is expected to continue the BND's mission, ensuring that it remains a reliable and effective partner for the Federal Government in the years to come.
