Maryland confirms a cyber attack impacting its state transportation infrastructure

The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is currently dealing with a cyber incident, causing disruptions to some of its services.

The MTA has confirmed that there are temporary disruptions in Mobility Paratransit Services, with new trip bookings and rescheduling of existing trips unavailable. However, the MTA's previously scheduled Mobility trips for this week will still be honored. Eligible riders are advised to consider using the Call-A-Ride program as an alternative.

The MTA's real-time updates and call center support continue to experience disruptions, making it challenging for customers to get real-time information about their journeys. Most core transit services, including Local Bus, Metro Subway, Light Rail, MARC, Mobility, Call-A-Ride, and Commuter Bus, are currently running as scheduled.

The cyber incident was due to unauthorized access to specific systems, as stated in an August 24 statement. The MTA is collaborating with the Maryland Department of Information Technology (DoIT), third-party cybersecurity experts, and law enforcement partners for the cyber incident remediation.

In a related development, the Maryland Department of Emergency Management (MDEM) has activated the Statewide Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) to coordinate the state's response to the emergency. The SEOC includes the MDEM, the MTA, the DoIT, and other appropriate state agencies.

Unfortunately, Baltimore Metro Subway elevators remain out of service due to unavailable elevator emergency phones. Customers with urgent medical needs are advised to contact their healthcare providers or appropriate emergency services.

The MTA continues to update the public on the situation and advises customers to check its official website or social media platforms for the latest information. The MTA appreciates the public's understanding and patience during this challenging time.
