Maryland Terrapins Dominate Florida Atlantic University in 39-7 Victory

The Maryland Terrapins showcased their dominance over the Florida Atlantic University (FAU) Owls in a lopsided 39-7 victory on Saturday. The game saw numerous highlight-worthy moments, including four interceptions by the Terrapins' defense and a standout performance by true freshman quarterback Malik Washington.

The Terrapins took the lead early in the first quarter when Sean O'Haire converted a 49-yard field goal, making it 3-0. Maryland extended their lead later in the quarter when Sidney Stewart forced a safety, making it 5-0.

Washington, who started at quarterback for Maryland, had a stellar debut, throwing for 258 yards and three touchdowns. He connected with Shaleak Knotts and Kaleb Webb both from 29 yards out, and Dorian Fleming for a 9-yard touchdown. O'Haire added field goals of 24 and 42 yards.

The Terrapins' defense was equally impressive, committing five penalties on FAU's opening drive, but managing to stop them on a fourth-and-goal rush attempt. Maryland's Daniel Wingate had a pick-6 and a team-high 10 tackles, while Dontay Joyner, Lavain Scruggs, La'khi Roland, and Braydon Lee and Ricardo Cooper Jr. each intercepted FAU quarterback Caden Veltkamp.

Veltkamp, who went 30-of-49 passing for 228 yards and a touchdown, was intercepted four times. Zach Gibson, the backup quarterback for FAU, stepped in after Veltkamp was intercepted multiple times. Gibson, a Georgia State transfer with FBS experience, was expected to be a solid backup.

In the final minutes of the game, Khristian Martin and Justyn Martin took snaps at quarterback for Maryland. However, Justyn Martin was injured and carried off the field after being tackled on a QB keeper.

Easton Messer caught 15 passes for 87 yards for FAU, but it was not enough to prevent the Owls from suffering a significant defeat. This was the most interceptions in a game by the Terrapins' defense since 1998, highlighting their strong performance throughout the game.

The win marks a positive start for the Terrapins, who will look to build on this victory as they continue their season. The Owls, on the other hand, will need to regroup and address their defensive issues if they hope to compete in future games.
