Massive U.S. Lottery Yields $95 Million Prize to Lucky Winners
In an unprecedented move, Australian gambling billionaire Zeljko Ranogajec, known as 'The Joker' for his success in Blackjack, horse racing bets, and systematic participation in lotteries, and his partner Bernard Marantelli, a former derivatives trader at Deutsche Bank, claimed a staggering $95 million jackpot in the Texas lottery in April 2023.
The winning combination for the record-breaking prize was 3, 5, 18, 29, 30, and 52. The duo's strategy to cover all 25,827,165 possible combinations with lottery tickets paid off, making headlines across the globe.
Their approach, while unusual, was legal and did not violate Texas lottery law. The lottery terminals provided by Lottery.com were crucial for printing several million lottery tickets in a short time and storing them in the Texas lottery system. During the printing process, approximately 100 tickets were generated per second.
Their actions, however, were met with criticism in Texas. Dan Patrick, the Lieutenant Governor of Texas, described it as the biggest theft from residents in the history of Texas. Despite the controversy, investigations by the U.S. Wall Street Journal revealed the identities of the lottery winners a few weeks later.
To facilitate their strategy, Ranogajec and Marantelli founded four of their own lottery sales points and worked with Lottery.com as a service partner. The exact name of their company, which controls 274 lottery terminals, is "Tote Tasmania."
Following the incident, the Texas Lottery Commission updated their lottery software and limited the number of daily allowed tickets per terminal. The winning amount, after tax deductions, was approximately $57.8 million (€54.3 million) and was claimed by the company Rook TX.
Interestingly, in well-known American lotteries like Mega Millions and Powerball, high prize amounts are common, but a $36 million (€33.17 million) win in the Mega Millions lottery in Florida went unclaimed last year, causing the prize to expire.
Bernard Marantelli, apart from his lottery ventures, is also the founder of a stationary sports betting company in Australia and the online betting provider ColossusBets. His background in derivatives trading clearly played a role in the strategic approach taken to win the Texas lottery jackpot.
Despite the controversy, Ranogajec and Marantelli's win remains one of the most talked-about events in the world of lotteries. No criminal activities were found during investigations against the duo and their team. The incident serves as a reminder of the allure and potential of the lottery, as well as the importance of following the rules and regulations set in place.
