Matchup Preview for Saturday's Football Clash Between Hawaii and Arizona
The Arizona Wildcats are gearing up for the upcoming season, with a host of changes and new additions to their roster. Last week, the team suffered a setback against Stanford, but they are determined to bounce back.
Slotback Pofele Ashlock shared a potential weakness in Stanford's secondary with Micah Alejado, which led to a touchdown on a crossing pattern. The quarterback, Alejado, accounted for 98.4% of the Wildcats' pass attempts last year and averaged an impressive 6.13 yards per non-sack run. The spread offense, featuring run-pass option concepts and multiple personnel groups, seems to be a perfect fit for Alejado.
To bolster their offensive line, the Wildcats have added Ty Buchanan, Tristan Bounds, and Ka'ena Decambra through the portal. Meanwhile, Kedrick Reescano, a 4-star back with 16 power-4 offers, joins the team as a one-cut runner.
In an effort to boost the offense, Coach Brent Brennan has hired Dino Babers as an offensive coordinator for the 2024 season. Seth Doege, who was Marshall's offensive coordinator last season, has been brought in to install a snap-and-go offense.
On the defensive side, Tre Smith, a former All-Mountain West selection, will bring the heat as an edge defender. Danny Gonzales, who was promoted to defensive coordinator, succeeding Duane Akina, will oversee the changes.
The Wildcats have also added three transfer receivers: Kris Hutson (Washington State), Luke Wysong (New Mexico), and Javin Whatley (Chattanooga). Punter Billy Gowers, a newcomer to American football, has been working extensively on placing the ball in the 9-yard width between the sideline and numbers during preseason training.
Alejado and Ashlock have been forming a formidable duo, connecting on 17 of 20 targets in the past two games. However, Alejado suffered a sprained right ankle early in the second half of last week's opener but managed to play the Warriors' final 32 snaps. Luke Weaver, a JUCO All-American last year, has taken over the first-unit reps in contact drills while Alejado recovers. Weaver is making the adjustment from Modesto's spread attack to the Warriors' four-wide sets.
Despite missing 13 tackles against Stanford, with some misses due to a running back's spin move or stiff arm, and some on errant kill shots, the defense is determined to improve. The Warriors defense rotated 10 players on the front last week, with D-tackle De'Jon Benton playing 47 snaps and Jamar Sekona lining up 15 times.
Coach Timmy Chang, who was hired as an assistant coach for the Arizona Wildcats in 2021, will undoubtedly play a crucial role in the team's success this season. With a mix of experienced players and promising newcomers, the Wildcats are ready to take on the challenges of the new season.
