McLaren's Oscar Piastri clinches qualifying victory over Lando Norris at Zandvoort
News Article: Dutch Grand Prix Qualifying Round-up
The qualifying session for the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort saw a mix of excitement and drama, with several key moments that shaped the grid for Sunday's race.
In the first qualifying (Q1) session, the weather was sunny, but the strong wind presented a challenge. McLaren quickly set the pace, with Max Verstappen following in third. However, it was a close call for some drivers. Franco Colapinto narrowly missed out on advancing to Q2, while Gabriel Bortoleto scraped through by a few hundredths.
Yuki Tsunoda temporarily looked worse off than Ferrari, but he improved enough to advance to Q2. Unfortunately, Lance Stroll crashed in Turn 13 and was unable to continue in the qualifying, ensuring a disappointing start for Aston Martin.
In Q1, there were also issues for Ferrari, as Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton failed to make it into the top ten. The Red Bull camp, on the other hand, had a successful session. George Russell beat Verstappen's time and took P3, while Liam Lawson completed a strong team result by qualifying in fifth place.
As the sessions progressed, Oscar Piastri secured pole position for the Dutch GP with a time of 1:08.662 in Q3. Max Verstappen qualified in third place, while Lewis Hamilton could only manage eighth. Lando Norris put in a strong performance, finishing qualifying in second place, just 0.012 seconds behind Piastri.
Charles Leclerc qualified in seventh place, while Kimi Antonelli and Yuki Tsunoda finished 11th and 12th respectively. Carlos Sainz qualified in ninth place, and Isack Hadjar stormed to a sensational fourth place in his Racing Bull.
Aston Martin failed to capitalize on their promising practice performances, with Fernando Alonso qualifying in tenth place. Nico Hülkenberg, who was eliminated in Q1, will start from the back after his Q1 crash.
The Sprint race in Zandvoort will see Lando Norris start from the second position, behind teammate Oscar Piastri who took pole position. The Dutch Grand Prix promises to be an exciting race, with Piastri aiming to maintain his pole position and the other drivers fighting for the top spots.
