Mekong Institute and AMEICC Secretariat to strengthen inter-regional partnerships
The Mekong Institute and the AEMICC Economic and Industrial Cooperation Committee have joined forces to bolster regional development in the Mekong Subregion. In a significant move, the two organizations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a cooperative framework.
The partnership, built on mutual trust and a shared commitment to regional development, aims to launch joint projects addressing key issues in the Mekong Subregion. These projects will be designed to foster collaborative efforts among various stakeholders, with the ultimate goal of deepening regional cooperation and integration.
The Mekong Institute, an inter-governmental organization founded in 1996, represents Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and China. Its mission is to accelerate sustainable socioeconomic development in the Greater Mekong Subregion by promoting regional cooperation and integration.
The AMEICC Secretariat, the operating arm for AMEICC, was established in 1998 as a platform for policy consultations between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) and Japan. AMEICC aims to enhance industrial cooperation, improve competitiveness, and provide development assistance to member countries through Ministerial-level consultations, sectoral working groups, and Asean-Japan cooperative projects.
Under this partnership, the organizations may collaborate on joint research and publications to share findings, provide recommendations, and highlight best practices. They may also develop programs to train and deploy technical experts, researchers, and interns in support of development goals.
The collaboration may initiate conferences and dialogues, such as the Mekong Forum, to bring together stakeholders for discussions on regional development and policy issues. Additionally, the partnership may explore initiatives to create a robust and resilient supply chain ecosystem that supports sustainable economic growth.
In a separate development, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) announced the signing of an MoU on Thursday. This collaboration will focus on promoting cooperation in technical collaboration, capacity building, and sustainable development initiatives in the Mekong region and beyond. The organizations may collaborate on assessing infrastructure needs, identifying trade opportunities, and maximizing economic benefits along the West-East Corridor.
The MoU between the Mekong Institute and the AEMICC Secretariat does not create any legal or financial commitments but serves as a statement of intent to guide future cooperation. It will remain in effect for five years and can be renewed by mutual written agreement.
In conclusion, the partnership between the Mekong Institute and the AEMICC Secretariat is a significant step towards strengthening cooperation between Japan and the Mekong region. The collaboration may contribute to the sustainable socioeconomic development of the Greater Mekong Subregion by focusing on key areas such as supply chain advancement and resilience, Mekong corridor development, co-creation projects, regional convenings and dialogues, and capacity building and expertise exchange.
