In Germany, the use of emergency lanes, known as Rettungsgassen, is strictly regulated. Only emergency vehicles such as ambulances, fire brigades, and police are permitted to use these lanes, which must be formed on highways and multi-lane roads during traffic jams to allow unhindered passage.
The ADAC, a prominent automobile club in Germany, explains that both the non-formation or incorrect formation of a rescue lane, and the unauthorized passage are penalized. The fines for violations of the rescue lane rules can be significant, ranging from 200 to 320 euros. In addition, a violation may result in two points on the driver's license and a one-month driving ban.
Recently, a traffic accident on the A61 in Rhineland-Palatinate resulted in five injuries. The driver involved in the accident was banned and fined for driving through the rescue lane during a traffic jam. According to the ADAC, the fine for driving unauthorized through a rescue lane is prescribed by the Ministry of Transport and ranges between 240 and 320 euros.
The ADAC advises that a rescue lane should be created between the far-left and the immediately adjacent right lane. To form a rescue lane, drivers on the left lane should move to the left, and all others to the right. The hard shoulder should be kept clear if possible when forming a rescue lane.
The obligation to form a rescue lane applies to all multi-lane highways. In case of obstructions, endangerments, or property damage, the fine for not forming a rescue lane can increase up to 320 euros. The ADAC emphasizes that a rescue lane should not be used unless necessary for emergency purposes.
In a court ruling in 2022, it was decided that a rescue lane should be formed at slow-moving traffic. The ADAC provides detailed explanations of the penalties for violations of the rescue lane rules, encouraging drivers to adhere to these regulations for the safety of all road users.
