In a historic visit, Most Reverend José Ángel Saiz Meneses, Archbishop of Seville, journeyed to Panama earlier this month. The visit underscored the historical, cultural, and spiritual ties between the two nations.

The Archbishop's delegation was received by Ilya Espino de Marotta, Deputy Administrator of the Panama Canal. The tour began with a visit to the monument dedicated to the Spanish workers who participated in the construction of the Panama Canal between 1906 and 1914. Created by artist Lorenzo Cerdán and clad with Galician stone by Gonzalo Sánchez Mendizábal, the monument was inaugurated in February 2024 on the Amador Causeway. It honours over 20,000 Spanish workers who contributed to the construction of the Panama Canal. Archbishop Saiz Meneses laid a floral offering at the foot of the monument.

The tour continued with a visit to the Biomuseum, where the Archbishop learned about the history of the Isthmus and its biodiversity. The strategic position of Panama as a bridge of the world and the value as a meeting point of cultures were highlighted during this visit.

The operation of the Panama Canal was observed at the Miraflores Locks Visitor Center, where the day ended. The visits were part of the jubilee celebrations for the Panamanian Church and its relationship with the mother church of Seville. The visit aimed to celebrate the Jubilee of the 512 years of the first diocese on solid ground and the centennial of the Archdiocese of Panama.
