Men's Golf at Holy Cross Commences Play Once More
Holy Cross Men's Golf Team Shows Promise for the Future
Two standout players, Nolan Schuermann and Matt Williams, are leading a young team at Holy Cross College, a school known for its strong academic programs and Jesuit connection.
Nolan Schuermann, a sophomore, chose Holy Cross over other institutions due to its academic reputation and the Jesuit connection he had from St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. Despite not visiting the campus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Schuermann committed to Holy Cross and has since become a key player for the team.
Schuermann started playing competitive golf during his freshman year at St. Xavier and has since developed into a formidable golfer. He played in each of Holy Cross' 27 rounds as a sophomore and placed 10th overall at the 2023 Patriot League Championship.
Matt Williams, a junior, joined the team as a freshman and has also made a significant impact. Williams started playing golf when he was 12 years old, after being forced to attend a golf camp by his mother. He honed his skills, particularly his short game, and has since become a valuable asset to the team. Last season, Williams led the team at the Lehigh Invitational with a 14th place finish.
Williams' dedication to the sport did not go unnoticed. Steve Napoli, the head coach of the Holy Cross men's and women's golf teams, eventually contacted Matt and convinced him to commit to Holy Cross.
The Holy Cross men's golf team has depth and the potential to win the Patriot League Championship, according to Coach Napoli. The team placed eleventh out of thirteen teams in a recent tournament, but Napoli is optimistic about the future.
The team is primarily composed of underclassmen, with three freshmen - Alex Elia, Thomas O'Neill, and Ryan Scollins - already making their mark. Each of these freshmen played in a tournament last fall, demonstrating their potential.
In addition to Schuermann and Williams, Aiden Konold, who worked as a golf instructor and participated in various amateur tournaments to sustainably advance his golf career before attending Holy Cross College, is another player to watch.
Despite the challenges of learning to identify and fix golf problems independently, Schuermann has proven himself to be a valuable player for the team. He was the leading scorer for the team during the fall of his freshman year, despite struggling in the spring.
The Holy Cross men's golf team participated in the Savannah Intercollegiate Golf Tournament and will continue to compete in tournaments throughout the season. With the talent and potential on the team, it's clear that Holy Cross is a team to watch in the Patriot League.
