Mercedes-Benz has announced a recall of certain plug-in hybrid models from its AMG performance division, affecting a total of 2,943 vehicles in the U.S. The recall is due to a software error that may cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

The affected vehicles range from the 2023-2025 model years and include the AMG S 63 E Performance, AMG GT 63 S E Performance 4-Door Coupe, AMG GT 63 S E Performance, AMG SL 63 S E Performance, and AMG GLC 63 S E Performance (both the regular SUV and coupe-like model).

The company determined that a potential safety risk couldn't be ruled out, and the remedy for the recall involves updating the control unit's software. Affected owners will be notified by mail starting April 29, and this service will be performed free of charge by dealers.

Mercedes became aware of the issue in late 2024 due to individual reports of vehicles failing to start. As of now, Mercedes isn't aware of any crashes or injuries related to the defect. The recall campaign number is 25V129000, and the recall information can be found on Mercedes' recall page.

The recall was published by the NHTSA on Feb. 28. Owners with concerns or questions about the recall can contact Mercedes at 1-800-367-6372. It's important to note that this failure could result in a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

Drivers are advised to follow the instructions provided by Mercedes once they receive the recall notification. This is a critical safety issue, and addressing it promptly is essential to ensure the continued safe operation of these vehicles.
