Meta Accused of Inflating Ad Performance; TikTok Prescribes AI Mandate; AI Intrusion in Journalism Discussed by Teodora Tepavicharova of Condé Nast

In the ever-evolving digital landscape, several notable developments have emerged this week.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is facing new claims of ad misreporting, specifically for its e-commerce format, Shops ads. Whistleblower Samujjal Purkayastha alleges that Meta inflated return on ad spend, a serious accusation that could have significant implications for the tech giant. The allegations also involve Meta bypassing Apple's privacy rules and counting shipping fees as revenue, subsidising bids in auctions, and offering undisclosed discounts.

Meanwhile, TikTok has introduced an AI mandate for brands selling through the platform. Starting from 1st September, TikTok Shop brands are required to use a new AI ad tool. The AI algorithm is designed to help advertisers get the most value for their advertising dollars. However, some TikTok Shop brands are reportedly unhappy about the shift, expressing a desire to retain control over their ad targeting.

AI is also making its way into journalism, as discussed on this week's episode of the MadTech Podcast. Participants on the podcast include Grainne Reid, website head of marketing, Teodora Tepavicharova, programmatic strategy at Condé Nast, and John Still, head of content.

Elsewhere, concerns about AI-generated content in journalism have arisen. Wired and Business Insider have removed news features written by a freelance journalist due to suspicions that the articles were AI-generated works of fiction. The person suspected of having written these articles, Margaux Blanchard, has published questionable articles in several other UK and US online publications since April.

Lastly, don't miss out on the ATS London event on 9th September, titled Revolutionising Publishing: Technology, Collaboration, and Opportunity. Teodora Tepavicharova, programmatic strategy at Condé Nast, will be on the panel, discussing the future of publishing. You can register for the event through the provided link.

Stay tuned for more updates as the digital world continues to evolve.
