Meta, the social media giant, has made a significant move in the AI sector with the acquisition of Scale AI as part of a billion-dollar AI talent spending spree. The founder of Scale AI, Alexandr Wang, is now the new Chief AI Officer at Meta.

Scale AI, known for its AI image generator Midjourney, can create not only images but also short videos. In a strategic move, Meta will license Midjourney's "aesthetic technology" for future products and models. This partnership marks one of Wang's first big public moves as Meta's first-ever Chief AI Officer.

The "aesthetic technology" from Midjourney is believed to be more advanced than Meta's current AI image and video generation tools. In August 2023, Meta had already licensed the technology for creating images and short videos from Runway, another AI company.

Wang was poached from rivals like ChatGPT-maker OpenAI as part of Meta's AI talent acquisition. This move comes as Meta has recently announced a hiring freeze as part of an internal restructuring of the company's AI efforts.

The announcement of this partnership was made by Alexandr Wang himself, on a yet undisclosed date. As Meta continues to push the boundaries of AI technology, the addition of Wang and Scale AI's capabilities promises exciting developments in the realm of AI-generated visual content.
