Methods for Reducing Garden Water Usage
Adriana Copaceanu, a nature lover and author of books on growing lavender and raising chickens, is taking an active role in spreading the word about sustainable living. Based on her property, where she grows vegetables, lavender, and wildflowers, and shares them with wildlife, Copaceanu is eager to reduce water usage in her garden while still growing vegetables.
One of the methods Copaceanu employs is deep root drip irrigation. This system delivers water directly to the roots of plants, encouraging roots to develop deep into the soil instead of higher up. By doing so, it helps conserve water and reduces evaporation, making watering plants more efficient, especially when done in the early morning or late evening.
In addition to drip irrigation, Copaceanu recommends efficient water use in gardens by employing rainwater harvesting, using drought-resistant plants, and implementing mulching techniques to retain soil moisture. Rain barrels can be used to collect rainwater for garden use, reducing the amount of water drawn from the main supply.
Planting drought-tolerant flowers, vegetables, and herbs is another effective strategy. Examples of drought-tolerant flowers include roses, creeping phlox, dianthus, daylilies, lobelia, and lantana. Drought-tolerant vegetables include Swiss chard, asparagus, cucumbers, peppers, and pineapple tomatoes. Drought-tolerant herbs include sage, oregano, thyme, lavender, rosemary, and mint.
Planting plants with the same water needs together, planting heat-loving perennials in hot spots, arranging plants tightly, and strategically planting trees and shrubs for shade and wind blockage can also save water in the garden. Building up garden soil with rich compost and mulch can help reduce evaporation, keep down weeds, and provide proper nutrients for thriving vegetation.
Copaceanu's commitment to sustainability is not new. In the past, she lived in California and followed strict water consumption rules, using rock gardens. Her experiences have shaped her approach to gardening and her dedication to water conservation. Copaceanu believes that water conservation is important for sustainability due to the depletion of water reserves and the need to spend money and energy on pumping up water.
As Copaceanu continues to plan her next nature project and enjoy spending time with her chickens, she remains committed to spreading the message of sustainable living and water conservation in gardens.
