Mets demote pitcher Kodai Senga to Triple-A, seeking to rectify his issues as postseason approaches
The New York Mets have made a roster move, optioning right-hander Kodai Senga to Triple-A. This decision comes after a series of disappointing performances and injury concerns for the Japanese pitcher.
Senga, who finished second in the NL Rookie of the Year voting in 2023, has struggled recently, posting a 6.56 ERA in his last eight starts. His most recent outing against the Miami Marlins last weekend saw him surrender five runs in 4 2⁄3 innings.
Injuries have been a recurring issue for Senga. Last season, he was limited to just 10 1⁄3 innings, including the postseason. Unfortunately, the team's injury woes continue, with Sean Manaea ruled out for the rest of 2025.
Despite his struggles, Senga's demotion does not affect his postseason availability. However, his eligibility to pitch in October is dependent on his performance and recovery.
In his three seasons with the Mets, Senga has shown flashes of his potential, posting a 3.02 ERA in 113 1⁄3 innings this year. But his recent struggles have raised questions about his place in the rotation.
Clay Holmes currently occupies the fourth starter spot, while David Peterson holds the top position. Nolan McLean and Jonah Tong, who have impressed in their recent outings, could potentially challenge for a spot. McLean has pitched to a 1.37 ERA in four starts since being called up last month, and Tong allowed just one earned run in five innings in his debut last week.
Brandon Sproat is set to make his MLB debut this weekend, adding another option for the Mets' rotation.
It's important to note that Senga's demotion is subject to his consent, a clause common for veteran players from foreign leagues. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza has stated that they need to get Senga right and there will be discussions about his next steps.
The Mets are currently in the third wild card spot, five games up on the Cincinnati Reds, who they will visit for three games this weekend. The team will need to navigate these injuries and performance issues to maintain their playoff position.
