Mets embark on crucial away journey following a disappointing series against the Marlins, marked by sloppy play during the 11-17 August stretch.
New York Mets Struggle with Starting Rotation as Playoff Push Approaches
The New York Mets are facing a significant challenge in their pursuit of a playoff spot, with their starting rotation proving to be a major concern in recent games.
The team's struggles were evident in August, where they won only seven games not started by rookie pitchers who began the month in the minors. This poor performance was compounded by the struggles of Kodai Senga and David Peterson, who combined to give up 13 runs in 6 2/3 innings over the weekend.
Senga, in particular, has struggled since returning from a monthlong absence due to a strained right hamstring, giving up five runs in 4 2/3 innings on Sunday and posting a 5.90 ERA in nine starts since then.
However, there have been bright spots in the Mets' rotation. Nolan McLean and Jonah Tong have been a shining light, going 4-0 with a 1.07 ERA in their four starts. McLean and Tong are the only Mets starters with a good ERA in August, and they are the only ones to complete seven innings since June 2.
The Mets' poor August performance has taken a toll on their record, as they ended the month with a dismal 11-17 record. This follows a stretch of 35-42 since June 2, the eighth-worst record in the majors.
Despite these challenges, the Mets are currently four games ahead of the Cincinnati Reds for the final National League wild card. They will look to regain their momentum on their upcoming 10-game road trip, which includes a three-game series in Cincinnati and a four-game set in Philadelphia after visiting the Detroit Tigers.
Mets manager Buck Showalter has acknowledged the need for consistency in the starting rotation, stating, "We need to find some consistency in our starting rotation if we want to make a serious playoff push."
The Mets are also focusing on their roster and strategies to finish the season strong. Keider Montero, the team's pitcher, is currently receiving detailed analysis as the team prepares for the final games of the 2025 MLB season.
The Mets will need to address their starting rotation issues if they are to maintain their playoff position and make a serious run at the World Series. With key games against contending teams on their upcoming road trip, the pressure is on for the Mets to turn things around.
