MG Motor to Expand New Energy Vehicles Offerings with Semi-Solid-State Batteries

MG Motor, a subsidiary of the SAIC group, has announced its plans to expand its global New Energy Vehicles (NEV) offerings until 2027. The company is investing around 10 billion yuan (1.4 billion USD) in the development of new products and technologies, including semi-solid-state batteries.

Semi-solid batteries, which have a hybrid construction of solid and liquid electrolyte, are expected to provide significant cost advantages and higher energy density compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries. This technology is expected to contribute to the cost advantages and improved performance of the upcoming MG models.

One of the key models set for release in 2025 is the IM5, which is expected to be smaller and more stable than vehicles using conventional lithium-ion batteries. The IM5 and its counterpart, the IM6, are also anticipated to offer increased safety due to the properties of semi-solid batteries.

The IM5 and IM6 models, scheduled for release in 2025, are not primarily focused on price. Instead, they will aim to deliver a balance of performance, safety, and cost-effectiveness. MG Motor is also partnering with Oppo in the connectivity sphere to enhance the user experience of these new models.

In addition to pure EVs (BEVs), the IM5 and IM6 will also include plug-in hybrids and range extender models. A version of the recently launched MG4 Electric in China will be introduced with semi-solid-state batteries later this year.

MG Motor is also planning to introduce 13 new models with electrified powertrains over the next two years. The company's commitment to new energy vehicles is evident in its exploration of semi-solid-state batteries and its partnerships with other industry leaders.

The MG4 Electric is already available in China, and the company plans to introduce new models in the UK in 2025, specifically the IM5 and IM6, which will likely use the semi-solid battery technology. MG Motor's new models are expected to benefit from the technologies and supply chains of the parent company, SAIC.

As MG Motor continues to expand its NEV offerings, it is clear that the company is committed to delivering innovative and cost-effective solutions for the future of electric vehicles. With its investment in semi-solid-state batteries and partnerships with industry leaders, MG Motor is poised to make a significant impact in the electric vehicle market.
