Michael Jordan's liquor brand, Cincoro, is being sued, alleging it fails to meet the standard of using 100% agave in its tequila production.
In the world of spirits, a high-profile lawsuit has been filed against Cincoro Tequila, a premium brand co-founded by Michael Jordan, Jeanie Buss, Wes Edens, and other star athletes like Serena Williams and Derek Jeter. The lawsuit, filed by Florida resident Nabil Haschemie in the U.S. District Court, South District of California, alleges that Cincoro Tequila is not made from 100% Blue Weber agave, as it is labeled.
The CRT, the Mexican governmental body that regulates tequila, states that the spirit must be made solely from the Tequilana Weber Blue variety agave. However, the lawsuit against Cincoro claims that the tequila contains ethanol derived from plants like corn and sugarcane, not Blue Weber agave.
This isn't an isolated incident. Diageo's tequila brands Don Julio and Casamigos are also involved in a similar lawsuit, claiming they are not made from 100% agave.
The practice of mixing cane alcohol into tequila sold as 100% agave is reported to have started when agave prices were high and is said to continue to this day. Remberto Galván Cabrera, a spokesperson for the Mexican Agave Council, has previously claimed that tequila companies have been engaging in this practice.
Cincoro has issued a statement denying the allegations of mislabeling in the lawsuit. However, the statement does not explicitly mention the claim of being made from 100% agave.
Jonah Flicker, the current whiskey critic for the website, has been reviewing the most newsworthy releases around. The controversy surrounding Cincoro Tequila is sure to generate significant interest and discussion in the spirits industry.
Cincoro Tequila is priced between $90 for the blanco and $1,700 for the extra añejo expression. The plaintiff in the lawsuit against Cincoro Tequila is Casa Cuervo, a major tequila producer.
Cincoro plans to vigorously defend itself in court. The outcome of this lawsuit could have significant implications for the tequila industry and consumer trust. As the case unfolds, it will be interesting to see how Cincoro and other tequila brands respond to these allegations.
