Migrant boat disaster in western Turkey claims five lives
In the small Turkish town of Ayvalık, a tragic incident unfolded on Sunday, claiming the lives of several irregular migrants. A boat carrying 34 people, including a migrant smuggler, collided with a Turkish Coast Guard Command boat during a routine patrol against irregular immigration.
The collision resulted in the death of five people, and another person was seriously injured. One person is reported missing after the crash. The search and rescue mission retrieved the bodies of the deceased, and the seriously injured person was taken to the hospital.
Ayvalık, a town in the Balıkesir province, has been a hub for irregular immigrants seeking to cross into nearby Greek islands in recent years. Overloaded dinghies and unpredictable weather make the journey across the Aegean Sea deadly, and this incident is the latest in a series of tragedies involving irregular migrants.
The boat was traveling at a high speed when it was approached by the coast guard boat. Greece has been repeatedly criticized for its practices, including allegations of pushing irregular migrants back into Turkish waters. This incident comes as Greece has declared a three-month suspension on asylum requests from persons arriving by sea from North Africa.
The incident has sparked an investigation by local prosecutors. In response, the governorate of Balıkesir made a statement about the incident. Meanwhile, Greece is preparing legislation for migrant detention for up to two years for illegal entry and up to five years if subsequently caught staying in Greece illegally.
Turkey serves as a gateway for millions of migrants seeking better lives, particularly in Germany. The country has faced criticism for its handling of the migrant crisis, but it continues to be a crucial starting point for many migrants making the dangerous journey across the Aegean Sea.
Our thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives in this tragedy. This incident underscores the urgent need for a humane and effective approach to migration, one that prioritizes the safety and well-being of those seeking a better life.
