Militarized forces in Israel declare Gaza as a designated zone for humanitarian aid
In December 2023, the Israeli army has targeted the Islamic Hamas in northern and central Gaza, preparing for a corresponding offensive against the group. Amidst this escalating conflict, the Israeli army has designated a coastal area in southern Gaza, Al-Mawasi near Khan Yunis, as a "humanitarian zone."
The Al-Mawasi area, spanning approximately nine square kilometers, is currently home to a significant population. According to recent estimates, around 425,000 people were residing in the area in June this year. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) is currently working to improve sanitation facilities and waste management in this humanitarian zone.
The Al-Mawasi area is of crucial importance, housing essential humanitarian infrastructure such as field hospitals, water pipelines, and desalination plants. However, the capacities of the field clinics in the area are inadequate given the large number of people. The United Nations has described the sanitation facilities and waste management in the Al-Mawasi area as insufficient.
In an effort to alleviate the pressure on the city of Gaza, the Israeli army has urged the residents of the city in northern Gaza to move to the Al-Mawasi area as soon as possible. The Israeli army spokesperson made this plea, highlighting that the designated humanitarian zone, Al-Mawasi, contains vital humanitarian infrastructure.
Despite the urgent call for evacuation, less than 100,000 people have left the city due to the impending offensive. This leaves a substantial population still residing in the city, potentially at risk.
The Israeli military has intensified air strikes in preparation for the offensive, raising concerns about the safety and well-being of the civilian population. The Israeli government's plan to militarily capture the city of Gaza in the north of the sealed coastal region has added to these concerns.
However, humanitarian aid is being delivered to the Al-Mawasi area to support the displaced population. The Israeli army has also declared the city of Gaza's Al-Mawasi area a "humanitarian zone," acknowledging the need for protection and support for the civilians residing there.
As the situation in Gaza continues to unfold, the international community is closely monitoring the developments and the impact on the civilian population. The need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and the protection of human rights remains paramount.
