Military action initiated by Israel in Gaza City, involving the deployment of 60,000 reservists for the operation.
Israeli forces have taken control of the outskirts of Gaza City, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israeli forces and Hamas. Clashes have been reported in the area, with the Israeli Army preparing to expand its offensive in Gaza.
Defence Minister Israel Katz has approved a military plan, and Israeli troops are being deployed in Jabalia and the neighborhood of Zeitoun. The Israeli Army is also planning the displacement of over a million people, as part of its offensive strategy.
In a separate development, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has sanctioned four of its members due to investigations into international war crimes in the Gaza Strip and Afghanistan. The sanctions target Kimberly Prost of Canada, Nicolas Guillou of France, Nazhat Shameem Khan of Fiji, and Mame Mandiaye Niang of Senegal. The sanctions include blocking any assets the individuals may have in the US, and prohibiting transactions, including transfers or receipt of funds, between those targeted and US citizens.
The ICC has condemned Washington's announcement of sanctions against its members, describing it as a "brazen attack on the independence" of the court. The ICC has also stated that it will continue to fulfill its mandates "in strict compliance with its legal framework, regardless of any pressure or threat".
The Israeli government has also been in the news for its aggressive settlement policies. Since Benjamin Netanyahu came to power in 2022, Israel has approved a record number of new settlements and land confiscations. One of the most controversial moves has been the approval of the construction of 3,410 homes near East Jerusalem in the area known as "E1". The Israeli government is also constructing a new road that will separate Palestinian and Israeli traffic in East Jerusalem. The military control point for entering East Jerusalem will also be moved 14 kilometers to the east.
The Palestinians claim Jerusalem as the capital of their future state, and these moves have been met with strong condemnation from the international community. Approximately 20,000 previously mobilized reservists will receive extended service orders, and Israel has issued around 60,000 mobilization orders for reservists.
The US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also announced new sanctions against four more members of the International Criminal Court (ICC). The situation in Gaza and the ongoing investigations by the ICC are likely to continue to dominate headlines in the coming weeks.
