Military of Israel claims dominion over 40% of Gaza City
In the heart of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, residents are bearing the brunt of the violence. Yousef Suleiman, a resident of the Nuseirat refugee camp, reported a tragic incident where his relatives were killed in a pre-dawn strike, and their tent was destroyed.
The health ministry in the Hamas-run Gaza reported that Israel's retaliatory offensive has claimed at least 64,231 lives, most of them civilians. These figures are considered reliable by the United Nations. The European Union's top official, Teresa Ribera, has called the war in Gaza a "genocide," echoing sentiments expressed in a Politico interview during the 2023 Gaza conflict.
The Israeli military, however, has claimed they were not aware of an air strike in Nuseirat refugee camp. In a separate incident, a civil defense spokesman reported an Israeli air strike hit a tent sheltering a displaced Palestinian family in Gaza City, resulting in the death of five people, including three children.
The Israeli military is preparing for a new offensive, aiming to conquer Gaza City after nearly two years of war. They expect this new operation to push an estimated one million Palestinians south, away from Gaza City. This anticipated displacement adds to the already dire humanitarian situation in the region.
The United Nations last month declared a famine in and around Gaza City, and UNICEF spokeswoman Tess Ingram stated that the collapse of essential services has begun in Gaza City due to the escalating military operation. Ingram warned that without immediate and increased access to food, more children will starve in Gaza.
Media restrictions in Gaza and access difficulties prevent independent verification of the tolls and details provided by the civil defense agency or the Israeli military. Despite these challenges, reports continue to emerge of civilian casualties, with over 64 Palestinians killed across the Gaza Strip.
In a bid to end the conflict, Hamas's top officials met with Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Doha. The Israeli military spokesman, Brigadier General Effie Defrin, vowed to increase pressure on Palestinian militant group Hamas.
As the conflict continues, the international community is urged to take action to alleviate the suffering of the people of Gaza and work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
