Increase in Church Attendance Among Royal Marines
A notable trend of young people, particularly men aged between 18 to 24, turning to religion is being observed among the Royal Marines. This rise in religious inclination, specifically towards Christianity, has been a growing phenomenon not only within the Armed Forces but across various sectors.
According to reports, the number of Royal Marine recruits attending church services is on the rise, with the trend being most pronounced at the training centre in Lympstone, Devon. Royal Naval chaplain Reverend A Gascoyne has noted that many recruits are attending bible sessions, bringing their questions and sharing their experiences.
The growth in church attendance among young Royal Marines is not primarily due to fears of deploying to a combat zone or a future war with Russia. Instead, it appears that these recruits are seeking a new moral code. Many express an interest in God and baptism, finding the teachings and mindsets of Jesus Christ to provide a bedrock for building a strong life.
The Regain Tank at the training centre, a 4ft deep tank with ropes suspended above, has been used for baptisms by the recruits. At least 26 recruits underwent a full immersion baptism earlier this year at this unique location.
The increase in church attendance at the base has risen rapidly in the last 18 months. In fact, the trend of young people regularly attending church services has grown from 4% in 2018 to 16% in 2024. The Royal Marines have increasingly organized baptism ceremonies in the pool of their training camp over the past 18 months.
For some recruits, the attraction of the church and being baptized includes the opportunity for a fresh start. The new-found interest in Christianity among Royal Marine recruits was revealed in an article entitled "The Quiet Revival" for the Royal Marine publication, Globe And Laurel magazine. This growing trend among young people in the Armed Forces is part of a broader movement that reflects a search for meaning and purpose in today's society.
