Millennial Carlo Acutis, a notable figure in the digital realm, set to be canonized as the first saint in his generation.
Carlo Acutis, an Italian teenager born in London in 1991 to Italian parents, is set to make history as the first millennial saint. The ceremony for his canonization will take place in St Peter's Square on Sunday, marking the first such event for Pope Leo XIV.
A devout Catholic from a young age, Acutis was deeply influenced by a religious Polish nanny. Growing up in Milan, he attended mass daily and developed a passion for computer games. This passion led him to teach himself basic coding, which he later used to document miracles and other elements of the Catholic faith online, earning him the nickname "Cyber-Apostle."
A fan of computer games, Acutis used his coding skills to create a website dedicated to documenting eucharistic miracles and other aspects of the Catholic faith. His devotion to the Eucharist was evident, and he was recognized as a pioneer in using the internet to promote the faith.
In 2006, at the age of 15, Acutis tragically passed away due to leukemia. However, his impact lived on, as he was considered a model of youthful holiness who devoted his short life to God, helping the poor, and documenting eucharistic miracles online.
The Vatican has recognized Acutis as performing two miracles since his death. The first miracle was the healing of a Brazilian child suffering from a rare pancreatic malformation. The second miracle was the recovery of a Costa Rican student seriously injured in an accident.
Acutis was beatified in 2020 by Pope Francis, and his body now lies in a glass-walled tomb in Assisi, visited by hundreds of thousands of people annually. A large tapestry featuring a photograph of Carlo Acutis has been hung on the facade of St. Peter's Basilica ahead of the ceremony.
Among the pilgrims, over 800 people are traveling from Assisi on a special train. Domenico Sorrentino, bishop of Assisi, called on young people to follow Acutis's example, stating that he was a shining example of what it means to be a faithful and compassionate young person.
In a video, Antonia Salzano, Carlo Acutis's mother, said, "My son was proof that 'we are all called to be saints... everyone is special.'" Tens of thousands of pilgrims are expected at the Vatican for the ceremony, celebrating the life and legacy of this extraordinary young man.
The canonization of Carlo Acutis serves as a reminder that no matter one's age, one can make a significant impact on the world and inspire others to live a life of faith and compassion.
